Inside Poetry: Getting At The Poem's Basic Meaning & Technique

Ask yourself the following questions that apply to your focus question. Make notes as you go, and you will find it easier to organize your thoughts for the first draft.
  • The poem's basic content
    1. What is the context of the poem? Identify the speaker(s) and any background information that would help explain the poem's basic message.
    2. How are the thoughts organized?
    3. Does the poet contrast any ideas? Does he/she juxtapose any for effect?
    4. What feelings does the speaker reveal?

Now that you have collected your thoughts along with those of the critics, the next step is to organize the materials in preparation for writing. Before determining which pattern of organization you use, you must give careful thought to the essay's specific purpose. In other words, before you can select and arrange the specific details, you must know what main idea you are trying to get across to your reader. A a check to see if your understanding of the essay's purpose is clear, try stating the main thoughts in a single sentence.

To Make a Dadaist Poem

  1. Take a news article (from your RSS aggregator, for example)
  2. Take some scissors
  3. Print the article
  4. Get a small bag (pencil case, ziplock, lunch bag)
  5. Cut the article into bits, one word per bit.

Ten Minute Spill

Write a ten-line poem. Find a proverb, adage, familiar phrase, or brainy quote that you have changed in some way as well as five of the following words: cliff, blackberry, needle, cloud, voice, mother, whir, lick. First Lines

Turn off moderation from your Dashboard==>Options ==>Discussion. Begin your post with the first line of a poem. Now you go to someone else's blog and comment the next line. (Meanwhile your post will collect lines for your poem.) Try to post one line on everyone's blog. When you commented on all posts go back to your post and cut and paste as much as you like into a new poem. Post your finished poem.
